What is an RBT?
A Registered Behavior Technician (RBT) is a certified professional who helps deliver applied behavior analysis (ABA) services under close supervision. RBTs work directly with learners to practice skills and carry out the teaching and behavior-support procedures in an individualized treatment plan.
The role combines hands-on support with careful observation, accurate records, and regular communication with a supervisor. At GBS, this work connects with our focus on practical skills and collaboration with families.
Your role in a treatment plan
The BCBA guides assessment, sets treatment goals with the family, and develops and reviews the plan. The RBT puts the assigned procedures into practice during sessions, records what happens, and shares observations with the BCBA.
For example, a plan may include teaching a learner to ask for help during an activity. The RBT follows the agreed teaching steps and records the learner’s responses. The BCBA reviews those records and decides whether the plan needs to change. RBTs seek direction rather than independently changing treatment.
What the work can include
- Build rapport and prepare activities around the learner’s interests and assigned goals.
- Practice communication, social, or daily living skills using the procedures in the treatment plan.
- Collect accurate session data and document progress, challenges, and relevant observations.
- Bring questions and caregiver observations to the supervisor while protecting each learner’s privacy and dignity.
How RBTs are trained
- Meet eligibility requirements: be at least 18, have a high school education or equivalent, and pass required background and abuse registry checks.
- Complete 40 hours of training that meets BACB requirements. Topics include ABA principles, teaching procedures, data collection, documentation, ethics, and preparing for sessions.
- Complete an initial competency assessment after training. A qualified assessor checks that you can demonstrate required skills.
- Apply for certification and pass the RBT examination. A qualified supervisor must be in place before you begin providing services as an RBT.
Learning continues after certification
Certification is the beginning of supervised practice. RBTs receive ongoing observation, coaching, and feedback while delivering services. They must follow professional ethics and meet the BACB’s current supervision, professional development, and recertification requirements.
